MACON, Ga. – Stetson’s Garfield Blair continued his outstanding play over the last month in two games last week. He topped the 20-point mark for the sixth time in seven games in the Hatters’ 12-point win at home against Kennesaw State and while he failed to extend his run of 20-point games two days later against Mercer, he hit the game-winning shot against the Bears on Saturday lifting the Hatters to their first 4-1 start in A-Sun play in 10 years. For his efforts, he earned his first Player of the Week award, the conference office announced on Monday.
Blair, a junior E Business Technology major from Orlando, Fla., opened the week by scoring 13 of his 21 points against Kennesaw State in the second half to help quell an Owls rally that had cut a 25-point deficit to single digits. Two days later, Blair’s 10-foot jump shot in the lane lifted Stetson to a victory against Mercer and avoided losing a game in which the Hatters held a 16-point lead in the second half. Blair scored 18 in the contest, nine in each half.
In his last eight games, spanning one month, Blair has increased his scoring average from 11.2 points per game to his current mark of 16.1 PPG by scoring at least 17 points in all eight games, highlighted by a 32-point effort at UNF on January 5, the game that started the Hatters’ current four-game win streak. Blair also increased his rebounding over this eight-game span. After averaging 4.9 rebounds per game through the first 10 games, he grabbed no fewer than five in any of the eight games since in averaging 8.1 rebounds over that span.
