Belmont's Wiley and FAU's Storey Pick Up Weekly Honors

Date Posted: 4/3/2006

MACON, Ga. – Florida Atlantic’s Mickey Storey tossed the first no-hitter in the Atlantic Sun this season while Belmont’s Derek Wiley blasted four homers in a three-game sweep of ETSU as the pair capture A-Sun Pitcher and Player of the Week honors as announced by the league office.

Storey threw Florida Atlantic University’s first no-hitter since 1994 in a 2-0 win over Campbell University on Friday night. The sophomore only needed 100 pitches to dispatch the Camels who entered the contest hitting a league-best .313. The Deerfield Beach, Fla., native only faced two over the minimum with a walk and a hit batter. He fanned 10 Camels, just one strikeout shy of his career-high 11 strikeouts in the 1:50 minute win. Storey has thrown complete games in his last three outings (26.1 innings) and only allowed three runs. For the season, the sophomore is averaging 10.86 strikeouts per game and has a 4.5 strikeout/walk ratio while holding opponents to a .242 batting average. Storey has yet to determine a major.

For the week, Wiley hit .556 (10-for-18) with 11 RBI’s while leading the Bruins to a 4-0 week. The Dublin, Calif., punctuated the week in Belmont’s three-game sweep of then league-leading ETSU in Johnson City. Wiley went 9-for-14 (.643) with four homers and 10 RBI in the three-game set with the Buccaneers. Wiley’s offensive explosion vaulted him into a tie for third in the A-Sun with six home runs this season and helped the Bruins even their overall record at 14-14. His three bombs on Sunday are the most in a single game by an A-Sun player this season. The infielder slugged 1.278 for the week and is now hitting .333 for the season and .356 in A-Sun play. Wiley is majoring in Business Administration and becomes the third freshman and 16th first time winner of a baseball weekly award this season.

The Atlantic Sun Conference hands out Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week awards weekly during the 2006 baseball campaign.

The 11-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Florida Atlantic, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida and Stetson.
