MACON, Ga. – ETSU’s C.J. Lee and Gardner-Webb’s Blake Lalli provided fireworks during their three-game series at Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn., to earn Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors while UNF's Jeremy Papelobon claimed his second straight Pitcher of the Week award.
Lee hit .455 in the Bucs series with Gardner-Webb. In Saturday’s doubleheader, Lee homered in three consecutive at bats, doubling his season home run total. The junior hit a solo homer in the 10th inning of game one, a two-run shot in the first inning of game two, and three-run bomb in the third inning. The Bristol, Va., native finished the series 5-for-11 with a 1.273 slugging percentage, four runs scored and eight RBI. Five of the RBI were delivered in the 9-4 series clinching victory which put the Bucs just one win from clinching a spot in the 2006 A-Sun Championship presented by Progress Energy. For the season, Lee is now hitting .348 with 10 doubles, six home runs and 39 RBI. Lalli did his part to keep the Bulldogs in the postseason hunt despite losing 2-of-3 at ETSU. The Gibsonia, Pa., native regained his hold on the A-Sun batting race and gave GWU a boost offensively, batting 8-for-15 in four games (.533 average) with four home runs, a double, a triple, six RBI, eight runs scored and five walks. Lalli posted an atmospheric 1.533 slugging percentage and .650 on base percentage with an unheard of 2.183 OPS on the week. He also homered in three of the four games, and had his fourth multi-home run game at ETSU in the finale of a three-game series. Lalli is now batting a career-best .402 with 11 home runs (career-high), 37 RBI, 12 doubles and 39 runs scored in 51 starts. The versatile senior who has started at six different position this season has twice as many walks (32) as strikeouts (15) and leads the A-Sun in both batting (.402) and on base percentage (.489).
Papelbon picked up his second consecutive A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honor after lifting UNF to a series opening 7-1 victory over Lipscomb. The junior southpaw dominated for 8.0 innings, fanning eight Bisons and scattering just five hits. The Jacksonville, Fla., native surrendered just one run on a second inning homer. Papelbon needed just 98 pitchers during his eight innings of work, walking just one batter and limiting Lipscomb to a .167 batting average. For the year, Papelbon is 5-4 with a 2.43 ERA and .227 opponent batting average, both good for second in the A-Sun.
