Tucson, Ariz. – Belmont's Derek Wiley was named to Collegiate Baseball’s list of outstanding freshman, as voted on by the magazine. Wiley split time between first, second, and third base throughout the season, and was named to the list at third.
Wiley was also named the Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year, after the Dublin, Ca. native hit .342 for the season with 14 homeruns and 12 doubles. He also collected 48 RBI. Wiley set a school freshman record for homeruns, and was named A-Sun Player of the Week after parking three pitches in a game against ETSU.
Another third baseman was named the Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman of the Year, as Pedro Alvarez led cross-town rival Vanderbilt to a regional appearance. Winthrop’s Alex Wilson was named the top pitcher.
