MACON, Ga. – Mercer signee Cory Gearrin has garnered a spot on the Cape Cod Western Division All-Star squad. The game is scheduled for Saturday, July 29 at Red Wilson Field in South Yarmouth, Mass.

He sports a 1.88 ERA heading into the break to go along with 32 strikeouts in 24 innings of work. Gearrin is tied for fifth in saves with six as Cotuit leads the Cape Cod League in team pitching.

Gearrin, a transfer from Young Harris College, will look to stabilize the Bears’ bullpen next season.

In June, 175 Cape leaguers were drafted and one out of seven MLB players competed in the Cape Cod League.

A record total of 198 Cape League players were on Major League Baseball rosters last season, including Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek (Hyannis ’91 and ’93), infielders Brian Roberts (Chatham ’98) of the Baltimore Orioles and Nomar Garciaparra (Orleans ’93) of the Los Angeles Dodgers, outfielders Lance Berkman (Wareham ’96) of the Houston Astros and Jason Bay (Chatham ’99) of the Pittsburgh Pirates, pitchers Mark Mulder (Bourne ’97) of the St. Louis Cardinals and Barry Zito (Wareham ’97-’98) of the Oakland A’s.
