Monday, May 31, 2010 INDIANAPOLIS - Mercer learned it would be heading up Interstate 75 to partake in NCAA Regional Play. The Bears will open play with Georgia Tech, the No. 8 national seed. Alabama and Elon join Mercer. According to the NCAA release, only one team, Mercer, is making the field for the first time in the program's history. The Bears won their fourth A-Sun title on Saturday, beating Jacksonville, 7-3, to conclude an undefeated week. The Bears last won the A-Sun title in 1983, capping a run that included three titles in five years. The double-elimination regional begins Friday at 3 p.m. when No. 2 seed Alabama plays No. 3 seed Elon. No. 1 seed Georgia Tech plays No. 4 seed Mercer Friday at 7 p.m. The losers of Friday's games will play Saturday at 3 p.m. and the winners of Friday's games will square off Saturday at 7 p.m. Tech swept a pair of regular season games from the Bears, winning 15-8 in Macon on March 23 and 19-4 in Atlanta on March 24. A-Sun schools have been sent to Atlanta four times, all since the year 2000. In 2000, Stetson won two games, but lost to Georgia Tech in the Regional Final. Two years later, FAU faced Georgia Tech in a Super Regional but the Yellow Jackets prevailed in the three-game series. Stetson made it back to Atlanta in 2003 and beat top-seeded Georgia Tech in the opening game. The Hatters lost the Regional Final to South Carolina. The Hatters went 0-2 in Atlanta in 2006. In NCAA play, Stetson's 2003 win represents the conference's only win against Georgia Tech in seven tries. A-Sun schools own one NCAA win against Alabama (FAU, in 2002 to win the Tuscaloosa Regional) in three games. No A-Sun school has ever faced Elon in NCAA action. From RamblinWreck.com:
