Mercer Readies for Atlanta Regional Action

NCAA Tournament appearance on Friday evening when it takes on Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. in game two of the Atlanta Regional.

The game will be played at Russ Chandler Stadium on the campus of Georgia Tech and will be broadcast on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS).

Recap of season series against Georgia Tech

Mercer dropped both games of a home and home series with the Yellow Jackets this season. The Bears dropped a 15-8 decision at Claude Smith Field on March 23, and fell 19-4 in Atlanta on March 24.

Sophomore Mark Pope, who will be taking the ball for Tech on Friday night, pitched in game one against the Bears. Mercer had some success against the right-hander scoring six runs, five earned, on 10 hits in six innings of action. Sophomore Jacob Tanis went 3-for-4 in the contest with five RBI while junior John Moreland and freshman Evan Boyd tacked on two hits apiece in the loss.

Game two wasn't as promising for the Bears after the Yellow Jackets scored 13 runs in the first four innings of the game. Mercer had 10 hits in the contest led by Tanis and Boyd who had two hits apiece. Senior Lath Guyer came in for two innings of relief and allowed just one run while striking out three.

Scouting the Opposition

Georgia Tech (45-13, 21-9 ACC) enters play on Friday night after a 1-2 showing in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament this past weekend.

The Yellow Jackets are making their its 24th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 26 years and will be hosting an NCAA regional for the eighth time in the last 11 years.

Tech features one of the most prolific offenses in the country ranking second in home runs (114) and seventh in runs scored (539). Senior Tony Plagman leads the squad with 19 home runs, 73 RBI and 156 total bases. Seven of the regulars in the Yellow Jackets lineup have at least 10 home runs this season.
