Wednesday, March 30, 2011 BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Ellis Lowe knocked in two and scored a pair while Campbell relievers tossed six shutout innings to down visiting Duke, 4-1, Tuesday night at Taylor Field. The Camels improve to 12-14 on the season, while Duke falls to 15-12 with the midweek loss. The win was Campbell's first over the Blue Devils since 2001, when CU topped Duke 12-8 at Taylor Field and 7-0 in Durham. The win was also the Camels' first this season when scoring less than five runs, breaking a streak of 10 games. Campbell struck first in the contest, as back-to-back doubles from Lowe and Alan Denman gave the Camels an early 1-0 lead after one complete. Duke then answered in the third as Will Piwinica-Worms posted a one out triple, then scored on a wild pitch to knot the game at one. After going down in order in the fourth and fifth, the Camels manufactured a score in the sixth, as a Lowe sacrifice fly plated Jimmy Brenneman, who reached after being hit by a Drew Van Orden pitch. In the Duke eighth, the Blue Devils, down 2-1, rallied with two out as Anthony D'Alessandro doubled to right after a leadoff walk issued to Jeff Kremer. With Kremer rounding third on the play, Denman relayed the ball to Lowe who rifled to Ben Fish at the plate. Despite a collision at home, Fish secured the ball and put the tag on the Blue Devil base runner, getting the Camels out of the inning unscathed. In the bottom of the inning, Brenneman led off with a double to right, and was plated by Lowe four pitches later, giving the Camels a 3-1 win. The senior from San Diego, Calif. then scored on a Duke error to give Campbell a 4-1 advantage. |
