A-Sun Baseball Championship Primer: Who Needs Help

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

MACON, Ga. - In one week, the Atlantic Sun will conduct its Baseball Championship from Dugan Field at Lipscomb University. Today we take a look at the one school outside of the top six still capable of making the field.

FGCU EAGLES
Magic Number to Clinch: 5
Seed Scenarios: No. 5 or No. 6
Record/A-Sun Record: 24-28 (13-14, Atlantic Sun)
Boyd's World RPI/Warren Nolan RPI: 115/117
Remaining A-Sun Schedule: Home vs Lipscomb (Thursday, 6:30 pm; Friday, 4:00 pm; Saturday, 1:00pm)

How the Eagles Make the Field: The three-time regular-season champions enter the final weekend needing to at worst win its series with Lipscomb to have any chance of making the A-Sun Championship. FGCU can find their way into next week’s A-Sun Tournament in Nashville by sweeping the Bisons combined with first-place Stetson taking two games from Belmont. The Eagles can also get in by winning two games in addition to the Hatters sweeping the Bruins. The last scenario for the Eagles making the postseason exists by sweeping Lipscomb and ETSU sweeping Mercer.

The final weekend of play begins tomorrow four series carrying A-Sun Championship impact. Mercer hosts ETSU at 6 p.m.; Jacksonville and Kennesaw State also open at 6 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. we have first pitches between Lipscomb-FGCU and Belmont-Stetson .
