Opening Day Finds Big Wins for Three A-Sun Teams

MACON, Ga. - Atlantic Sun baseball found three key results on opening day with FGCU defeating Saint John's, North Florida beating West Virginia and Mercer finding a win vs. Ohio State.

FGCU rolled to its first victory of the season in a 6-0 shutout vs. St. John’s in the 2013 season opener at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. The Red Storm won the 2012 Big East Tournament title and were in the 2012 Super Regional.

Named the Atlantic Sun Preseason Pitcher of the Year heading into the season, the Eagles Ricky Knapp hurled six innings of scoreless baseball against 21 Red Storm hitters, totaling five strikeouts while surrendering just two hits and issuing just one walk in his first victory of the season.

North Florida's team earned a 4-0 shutout victory over West Virginia to start the season. Three Osprey pitchers combined for the shutout, while the UNF hitters posted ten hits on the night en route to the victory over the Big 12 foe.

The Bears came back in the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-5 and send the game into extra innings vs. the Big 10's Ohio State.

In the tenth inning Mercer's Michael Massi hit a single up the middle to allow Evan Boyd to score and give the Bears a 6-5 edge. Jaron Long pitched 5.2 innings with five strike outs for the the Bears.

A-Sun baseball continues Saturday, February 16th with 11 games scheduled.
