Freeman, Anderson Start the Season with Conference Honors

MACON, Ga. - The opening weekend of play for Atlantic Sun baseball teams had several top performers, but ETSU's Clinton Freeman and Jacksonville's Chris Anderson lay claim to the best as the duo earned the conference's weekly awards.

Freeman led the Buccaneers to a series victory vs. Penn State with eight hits, seven runs scored and five RBI, while Anderson fanned 13 batters in seven innings of work to set a career-high as the Dolphins defeated Radford, 2-1, in 11 innings.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

  • First Career A-Sun Player of the Week honor
  • Batted .800 (8-for-10) in the opening weekend with five extra-base hits
  • Crossed the plate seven times and reached base on 11 occasions with three homers
  • Recorded two solo homers and a triple on opening day vs. Penn State
  • Followed with 4-of-4 at the plate on Saturday and one inning pitched with three strikeouts
  • Completed series win for Bucs with two RBI and earned the save by record the final out on the mound
OTHER NOMINEES:
  • Brooks Beisner (1B, FGCU) - Drove in five runs with three extra-base hits to guide Eagles to 2-1 week
  • Chesny Young (3B, Mercer) - Went 6-for-14 to help Bears to 3-0 start with wins vs. Ohio State, St. John's and Notre Dame
  • Trey Richardson (IF/C, USC Upstate) - Had three extra-base hits in Spartans season-opener vs. Niagara
  • Jacob Bruce (OF, Kennesaw State) - Batted .417 in the opening weekend with five RBI
  • Brad Clement (IF, Northern Kentucky) - Recorded NKU's first Division I hit with a solo home run on Friday
  • Griffin Moore (UT, Lipscomb) - Had game-winning homer in Bisons win in the season opener
  • Joe Wielbruda (2B, North Florida) - Helped Ospreys to series vs. West Virginia with five hits and two RBI
PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Chris Anderson, Jacksonville

  • Second Career Pitcher of the Week honor
  • Allowed only one hit over seven innings pitched vs. Radford in the season opener
  • Struck out 13 batters to set a career high on Friday
  • Held Radford scoreless; JU eventually won the game in 11 innings, 2-1
  • Only hit allowed was a single through the right side
OTHER NOMINEES:
  • Ricky Knapp (RHP, FGCU) - Collected the win vs. St. John's with only two hits allowed in six innings
  • Brandon Lee (RHP, USC Upstate) - Posted the win vs. Niagara by striking out seven in six innings
  • Kevin Kyle (RHP, Kennesaw State) - Defeated Jacksonville State by allowing three hits with five fanned batters
  • Griffin Krieg (RHP, ETSU) - Earned win in his collegiate debut vs. Penn State on Saturday in five-inning outing
  • Hunter Brothers (RHP, Lipscomb) - Allowed only two hits in 4.2 innings of relief to earn win on opening day
  • Tyler Moore (RHP, North Florida) - Struck out six West Virginia batters on Friday with only two hits allowed in the win
