Bucs Rally vs. Mercer For Second #ASunBSB Extra-Inning Win

DELAND, Fla. – ETSU scored three runs on a wild pitch and two RBI singles in the top of the 10th inning to defeat top-seeded Mercer 7-4 in the second round of the 2013 Atlantic Sun Baseball Championship on Friday at Stetson's Melching Field at Conrad Park.

The No. 4 Buccaneers (34-22; 17-10) becomes the first team in tournament history to win two extra-inning games in championship history. The Bucs defeated Stetson in 11 innings in the first round on Wednesday, while No. 1 Mercer (43-15; 20-7) will also remain in the tournament having suffered only one loss.

ETSU relief pitcher/first baseman Clinton Freeman moved to the mound in the eighth and allowed only three hits through three innings to pick up the win and improve to 7-1 on the year. Dimitri Kourtis, a first-team all-conference relief pitcher, entered in the ninth inning and allowed three runs to take the loss. Kourtis now falls to 5-2.

Mercer second baseman Michael Massi was the first to put the Bears on the board. In the bottom of the fourth Massi doubled off the left field fence with the bases loaded to put the Bears up 3-0. Massi finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI.

ETSU responded in the top of the fifth with a RBI double by shortstop Chris Riopedre and a RBI single by catcher Mason Hershey to cut the Mercer lead down to 3-2. Riopedre finished 1-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI, while Hershey ended 2-for-3 with one RBI.

After the teams exchanged runs in the sixth and seventh inning, the Bucs’ designated hitter Kevin Phillips evened the score up at 4-4 with a solo homer over left field. Phillips went on to finish the game 1-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

Mercer will remain in the tournament with one loss to face No. 8 USC Upstate at 7:20 p.m. on Friday. The winner of that game will progress on to face ETSU on Saturday at 1:15 p.m.
