Macon,
Ga. - Stetson junior Corey Kluber was named the Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year
as Kluber and seven Hatters headline the all-conference first team as the league
office announced the full list of postseason honors prior to the A-Sun Championship
presented by Progress Energy.
Jacksonville senior Pete Clifford has been
chosen as the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year. Clifford was a unanimous selection
to the all-conference first team as an outfielder, his second year in a row on
the first team. Clifford batted .360 with 11 home runs and a league best 53 RBI.
Awards are determined by a vote of the league's head coaches.
Stetson
junior Corey Kluber was a unanimous selection as the conference's Pitcher of the
Year while head coach, Pete Dunn, won his fifth Coach of the Year honors. Lipscomb's
left-handed starting pitcher, Rex Brothers, was named Freshman of the Year after
posting an A-Sun best .208 opponents batting average. Brothers was named second
team all-conference.
Kluber was joined by six Stetson teammates on the
all-conference first team. Chris Ingoglia had the second best ERA in the A-Sun
behind Kluber to earn first team nods as a starting pitcher. Jeremy Cruz, Braedyn
Pruitt, Justin Bass, Shane Jordan and Brian Pruitt rounded out the Hatters first
team selections.
Belmont senior Charles Lee was the only non-Hatter to
be chosen as a first team starting pitcher. Lee is undefeated in conference play
going 6-0 with a 3.21 ERA.
Mercer junior Cory Gearrin leads the A-Sun with
13 saves earning him first team accolades over second team selection, Robbie Elsemiller
of Stetson. Shortstop Billy Shaughnessy of Mercer joined Gearrin on the first
team after batting .343 with 11 stolen bases.
Lipscomb catcher Caleb Joseph
beat out Atlantic Sun preseason player of the year, Josh Thompson, to earn first
team honors behind the plate. Joseph leads the A-Sun with 25 doubles and while
also tallying on 47 RBI.
T.J. Thompson of North Florida was the only freshman
to be named to the first team, earning honors at second base.
Mercer's
Brantley New and Belmont's Wilson Tucker both made the second team after being
on the first team in 2006.
The 2007 Atlantic Sun Championship presented
by Progress Energy opens on Wednesday when No. 2 Mercer faces No. 5 Gardner-Webb
