Macon, Ga. - The Atlantic Sun Conference will be
represented by two teams in the 2007 NCAA Baseball Championship. This marks the
ninth year in a row that the conference has sent at least two representatives
to NCAA Regional play. Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a
double-elimination format.
The regular season champions, the Stetson
Hatters (41-19), were an at-large selection and will travel to Tallahassee as
the No. 3 seed in the region. The Hatters will take on No. 2 seed Mississippi
St. Florida St. the national No. 6 seed, will host the region and face No. 4 seed
Bethune-Cookman. Stetson is 3-1 against Bethune-Cookman this season. They have
not played Florida St. or Mississippi St. in 2007.
The Hatters will be
making their third regional appearance in a row after winning the Atlantic Sun
tournament in 2005 and 2006. Stetson is 7-5 against the 2007 tournament field.
In 15 appearances, Stetson is 15-30 in NCAA Tournament play.
The A-Sun
tournament champions, the Jacksonville Dolphins (34-26), won the conference's
automatic bid and will play the national No. 3 seed North Carolina in
the Chapel Hill, N.C. regional. JU received the No. 4 seed in their region. East
Carolina is the No. 2 seed, and Western Carolina was named the No. 3 seed. The
Dolphins have not faced any team in their region this season.
Jacksonville
will be making their second appearance in a row in NCAA regional play. The Dolphins
were an at-large selection in 2006. JU went 7-5, including a win over No. 1 ranked
Florida St., against the 2007 tournament field. In 11 appearances, the Dolphins
are 9-22 in NCAA Tournament play.
