Jacksonville Blanked by Tar Heels

Date Posted: 6/1/2007

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Dolphins couldn't find the big hit when they needed it, and the Tar Heels pounded out six doubles as the JU baseball team fell to No. 3 North Carolina, 6-0, Friday evening in the first round of the 2007 Chapel Hill Regional at Boshamer Stadium.

JU (34-26) left 11 runners on base, including six runners in scoring position, as the Dolphins were shutout for the first time this season. The Dolphins are now 8-21 all-time in NCAA Regional play.

UNC (49-12) won its fourth consecutive game and tallied its sixth shutout of the season as the Tar Heels face East Carolina at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

"We got enough hits tonight but we didn't get the big hit with runners on base," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "You have to tip your cap to Andrew Woodard because he made the big pitches when he needed too."

Junior Matt Davis (4-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits (five extra base hits) with a walk and a strikeout in six innings of work. Senior first baseman Ryan McArdle and senior third baseman Thomas LePage each finished with two hits to lead the Dolphin offense.

Woodard (10-2) tallied his career high for wins after allowing eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts in eight shutout innings. The Tar Heels now have two 10-game winners (Adam Warren - 10-0) in the same year since 1984.

Tim Federowicz led the Tar Heels by going 3-for-4 from the plate with two doubles and two RBI.

The Tar Heels took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Josh Horton, Chad Flack and Kyle Seager hit back-to-back-to-back RBI doubles.

UNC made it 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Garrett Gore got a lucky bounce to second, which bounced over the head of a charging senior Logan James, to allow Seth Williams to score from second.

The Tar Heels added two more runs to make it 6-0 in the bottom of the eighth when Federowicz hit a two-run double into the right-field corner with two outs.

The Dolphins will next face Western Carolina at 1 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game for both teams.
