NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Florida Gulf Coast’s Ozzie Borrell followed the lead of Belmont’s Derek Wiley and USC Upstate’s Kyle Bowley, becoming the third student athlete from the Atlantic Sun Conference to be honored as top player in a summer league All-Star game.
Borrell, the starting third baseman for the South in the New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star game, went 2-for-2, including a home run and two runs batted in as the South rolled to an 8-0 win. Borrell opened the scoring in the third inning. Following a walk to Ryan Wiegand, Borrell hit a shot to right field, starting a six-run rally. One inning later, Borrell reached on an infield single. He left the game after five innings.
The home run was the first Borrell had hit in an NECBL game. He has not hit one in 33 games for the North Adams SteepleCats after hitting eight for Florida Gulf Coast. He is tied for the league lead in triples with five.
The rising senior hit eight triples for the Eagles, tied for fourth in the NCAA Division II. He also ranked in the top 30 in Division II with 63 runs batted in, in 56 games, to go along with a .359 batting average. For his efforts, he was named to the first-team All-South Region and also won a gold glove at third base.
Three other Atlantic Sun student-athletes participated in recent summer league All-Star games, including a pair from Lipscomb. Caleb Joseph was a reserve catcher in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star game, held on Saturday. Joseph entered the game in the seventh inning for the West Division All-Stars and had one plate appearance. He flew out to right in the seventh inning of a 3-2 loss for the West.
Joseph's teammate, Brandon McClurg along with ETSU's Bart Roark, were on the winning North Team in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League's All-Star game, held on July 21. McClurg entered the game in the seventh inning and threw a scoreless frame. He allowed one hit and retired the side on three fly outs.
Roark was the starting third baseman for the North and went 1-for-4 with a run scored in playing the entire game at the hot corner.
