Ex-Bruin Simmons wins ROY in Golden Baseball League

DUBLIN, CALIF. - Former Belmont baseball player, Kane Simmons, was named the 2007 Golden Baseball League (GBL) Spalding Rookie of the Year, it was announced on Monday.
Simmons, a member of the Reno Silver Socks, was named the player of the month for July by the GBL. He finished the season first in the league in home runs with 18 and in slugging percentage with a .628. He also finished in the top-10 in both batting average (.326) and RBIs (54).
Simmons, a native of Signal Mountain, Tenn., was a second team All-Atlantic Sun member last season after leading the league in home runs (15) and slugging percentage (.661). He helped Belmont reach the championship game of the Atlantic Sun Tournament, before the Bruins fell to Jacksonville on May 26.
Simmons has been invited to post-season tryouts with various Major League Baseball teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies.
