FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU baseball team clinched the Atlantic Sun Championship with a double-header sweep of East Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles won game one 9-5 and game two 6-2. The Eagles improve to 35-13 overall and 23-6 in the A-Sun while the Bucs fall to 18-34 and 9-20 in the A-Sun.

After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Eagles scored three runs in the second as Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off with a double. Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) followed with his first homer of the year to put the Eagles up 2-1. Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) doubled and scored on a single by Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.).

The Bucs scored with a single run in the third and FGCU broke open a tight game in the bottom of the seventh. Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) singled with one out and Coleman blasted his fifth homer of the season to right field. A walk by Rassel and single by Scarduzio gave the Eagles runners at the corners. Another walk loaded the bases for Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) who doubled to score two more runs.

The Eagles would hold on for a 9-5 win as Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) improved to 7-0 on the year and J.J. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) picked up his fifth save on the season. Coleman went 4-5 with three RBI and Scarduzio was 3-5 with a pair of runs scored as well. Rassel also drove in three runs in the game.

Pete Woodworth (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was dominant in game two as he mowed down a career-high 12 batters as he went 7.0 innings and scattered five hits and two runs, off back to back homers in the second inning. He improved to 7-2 on the year, as the Eagles became the first A-Sun team to win a league championship in their first season in the league.
