Belmont Downed by UCLA in NCAA Opener

Thursday, March 16, 2006

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - - Belmont’s Hollywood script was going according to plan: shots were falling, the crowd was abuzz, and college basketball’s most storied program was taking notice.

But alas, an early six point lead enjoyed by the widely unknown Atlantic Sun Champions would go by the boards, as talented and focused UCLA took “Battle of the Bruins” bragging rights with a workmanlike 78-44 victory in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Belmont struck first 32 seconds in, as senior co-captain Brian Collins (Nashville, Tenn.) drove and passed to junior center Boomer Herndon (Nashville, Tenn.) for an easy lay-in and a 2-0 lead.
