MACON, Ga. - After home wins vs. Miami (Fla.) and Ave Maria, FGCU swept the 2012-13 Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball weekly awards, announced by the league office on Tuesday.
The Eagles' Bernard Thompson won his first A-Sun Player of the Week honor after setting new career-highs at No. 9 Duke, while the Newcomer of the Week honors went to Eric McKnight following his 14-point effort against the Hurricanes in front of a record crowd in Alico Arena.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Bernard Thompson, FGCU (G – So. – Conyers, Ga. – Communications)
- First Career A-Sun Player of the Week honor
- Set a career-highs in points (24) and steals (5) at No. 9 Duke; also tallied six rebounds
- Added 13 points, four rebounds and four steals in 12-point win vs. Miami
- Produced 11 points and two assists in win vs. Ave Maria
- Shot 58.1 percent from the field and 72.7 from three-point land
OTHER NOMINEES:
- Torrey Craig (G, USC Upstate) - Tallied a season-high 27 points at Texas-San Antonio
- Markeith Cummings (F, Kennesaw State) - Posted 22 points per game including a conference-high 31 vs. Radford
- Malcolm Smith (G, Lipscomb) - Netted new career-high with 22 points in win at Gardner-Webb
- Travis Smith (G, Mercer) - Averaged 11 points and four rebounds at Paradise Jam Tournament
- Adam Pegg (C, Stetson) - Led Hatters to back-to-back 20-point wins for first time since 2000-01 season
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK:
Eric McKnight, FGCU (F – So. – Raleigh, N.C. – Communications)
- First Career Newcomer of the Week honor
- Posted 14 points in win vs. Miami with eight rebounds
- Averaged eight points, six rebounds and two blocks on the week
- Shot 50 percent from the field on 10-of-20 shooting
OTHER NOMINEES:
- Logan Irwin (G, Stetson) - Tallied 10 points in Hatters' 22-point win vs. Florida A&M
- Anthony Jr. White (G, Mercer) - Averaged four points and one rebounds at Paradise Jam Tournament
