Tuesday, March 05, 2013

MACON, Ga. - The search is over for the artwork that will appear as the program cover at the upcoming 2013 General Shale A-Sun Basketball Championship. Jessica Gu, a fifth-grader from Springdale Elementary School, provided the winning cover design in the A-Sun "Cover the Championship" contest.

The contest, sponsored by the Atlantic Sun Conference, Coca-Cola and Mercer University, was a coordinated effort between the A-Sun and the Bibb County School System. Beginning Friday, Feb. 22, and ending Wed., Feb. 27, fifth-graders received an opportunity to create and submit an illustration that best captures the excitement of the championship, which is March 6-9, at Hawkins Arena on the campus of Mercer University. The contest is a win-win for the system and the conference, as it provides an opportunity for the system to showcase the talent of its young artists, while the contest generates exposure for the A-Sun, its member institutions and the upcoming men's and women's basketball championship.

A panel comprised of community members judged the submissions and Gu's was chosen as the winner. Her design appears as the cover of the program available at the championship. As the winner she receives four tickets to Six flags compliments of contest sponsor Coca-Cola, four tickets to a session of the championship compliments of sponsor Mercer, and an A-Sun prize pack compliments of the conference.

Five runners-up were also chosen and their submissions included inside the program. Those students include Helen O'Dell from Alexander II magnet school, Stephanie Matlock from Springdale Elementary, Katie Kosowski from Springdale Elementary, Eujin Pyon from Heard Elementary and Katie Beth Threlkeld from Springdale Elementary. Those also receive a ticket to a championship session and an A-Sun prize pack. Additionally, all students who entered submissions receive a ticket to the championship.
