Sunday, March 17, 2013

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's basketball team garnered the No. 7 seed in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) as announced by the NCAA selection committee on Sunday evening, and will square off with No. 2 Tennessee in Knoxville on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

All tickets for the event are priced at $10 and are general admission. The game will be televised on ESPNU and also available at www.ESPN3.com and on mobile devices by using the WATCHESPN Application. Mercer's radio broadcast will be carried on WPCH, 96.5 FM with play-by-play coverage provided by "The Voice of the Bears", Rick Cameron.

Tennessee earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of a 20-12 (11-7 SEC) record that saw the team win nine of its last 11 games. After falling to Alabama in the quarterfinal round of SEC tournament, the Vols were among teams hopeful for an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament, but failed to gain entry. In Joe Lundardi's final bracketology report, the ESPN analyst had the Vols listed as his first team out of the NCAA Tournament field.

Tennessee also competed in the NIT last season, downing Savannah State 65-51 in the opening round before falling 71-64 to Middle Tennessee State. Mercer's appearance in the event is the program's first and marks its first NCAA sponsored postseason appearance since the 1984-85 season.
