North Carolina Rivals Square Off In CSS Game of the Week
Date Posted: 2/23/2007
With A-Sun Championship seeding at stake, Campbell hosts Gardner-Webb Saturday
in a 6:07 p.m. tip-off that will be televised throughout the Southeast on CSS.
Matt Stewart and Sonny Smith will be on hand to call the action.
The Fighting Camels are 11-3 at home this year with two losses coming by one
point margins. Campbell is also looking to break the school record for wins
in a year at Carter Gym (11) and post the program’s most overall wins since
the 1995-96 team finished 17-11. Depending on Saturday’s results, Campbell could
claim the 6th, 7th or 8th seed in next week’s A-Sun tournament. If CU defeats
Gardner-Webb and Stetson loses at Kennesaw State, CU would be 6th. The Camels
are ed by rookie Jonathan Rodriguez. He ranks 5th among the nation’s freshman
scoring leaders (16.9 points per game).
During the second half of Saturday’s game at Belmont, Campbell senior guard
Ledell Eackles broke the school single-season record of 77 steals set by Brad
Childress in 1988-89. Eackles, who ranks fourth nationally in steals at 3.0
per game, finished with seven thefts and now has 82 on the year.
Gardner-Webb is holding opponents to just 64.2 ppg over its last five games
(2-3 record), but the Bulldogs' offense hasn't kept up – scoring just 62.0 per
outing. Senior Chris Gash (12.6 ppg) and sophomore Takayo Siddle (11.0 ppg)
have averaged double digits individually, with newcomer Grayson Flittner (9.8
ppg) hitting double digits three times in those five games.
Saturday, 6:30 pm (ET) Gardner-Webb (9-19, 7-10)
at Campbell (12-16, 6-11)
