ORLANDO, Fla. - Duncan Stewart and Russell Knox both carded a one-over par 73 to lead the Jacksonville men's golf team to a 297 (nine-over par) total to sit in 10th place after the first round of the NCAA East Regional at Lake Nona Country Club.
Knox battled back from a rough start to get to post his score while Stewart remained steady in the difficult scoring conditions. The duo is tied for 27th place in the individual competition.
The top 10 teams advanced to the national championship in Sunriver, Ore., and the Dolphins, seeded 19th, enter the final two days in position to claim their first trip to nationals as JU has a one-shot lead over six teams.
"We teed off on the back nine, which is more difficult, and we got off to a slow start," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "Russell bounced back from four-putting the first hole to have a good round. Duncan played steady and we got a great round from Matt today too."
