JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - For the second straight season, the Golf Coaches Association of America has named ETSU junior Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) to its PING First-Team All-America squad. In addition, ETSU sophomore Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) joined Davies on the PING All-Region South team.
This past season, Davies was once again ranked in the nation’s Top 5 individually and was a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award, which is given annually to college golf’s top player. He earned Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Year honors, posting an impressive 70.78 stroke average for the season and firing sub-70 rounds a total of 15 times. He also increased his school record for career victories to seven with wins in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges and the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.
Davies, who will compete in his third career Palmer Cup this summer as a member of the European team, had seven Top 5 finishes in 14 events this past season – including a tie for third at the NCAA West Regional. His season-low round of 6-under-par 66 came at that same event.
