Friday, June 30, 2006 PRESTWICK, Scotland — Posting a perfect 4-0 mark in his matches, ETSU rising senior Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) helped power Europe to a record-breaking 19.5-4.5 victory over the United States at the 10th Palmer Cup at Prestwick Golf Club in Prestwick, Scotland. The former record was a 19-5 U.S. win against GB&I in the inaugural Palmer Cup in 1997 at Bay Hill. Davies, who was 2-0 during Thursday’s opening day, teamed up with Stephen Lewton to down American’s Chris Kirk and Kevin Larsen 4 and 3 in the morning’s foursome matches. In the afternoon, Davies took his second singles win of the event when he downed Luke List, 3 and 2. Davies birdied the first hole before bogeying No. 5 to even the match. He would claim Nos. 11-13 while the two halved the remaining three holes. The Europeans dominated from the beginning, leading 10-2 after Thursday’s play and wrapping up the team victory during Friday’s morning session. The Palmer Cup is a Ryder Cup-style event that pits the best players in college golf. |
