ETSU and Power Sweep Titles at Hackler Championship

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.  – Senior Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) won individual medalist honors for the fourth time in his college career, and the ETSU men’s golf maintained its slim second round lead to take the team championship during final round play Monday in the General Jim Hackler Championship at the TPC of Myrtle Beach.

The No. 31-ranked Buccaneers, who placed four players in the Top 22 on the individual leaderboard and bested second place Coastal Carolina by three strokes, captured a team title for the second time this season after having won the JU Invitational earlier this spring. It is also the second time the Bucs have won this event, as they also bested the field in 2006.

ETSU bested teams in the field such as No. 3-ranked Augusta State, Wake Forest, N.C. State, Pepperdine and Duke.

Power – who finished at 1-under 215 on Monday (69-71-75) – tied with Pepperdine’s Josh Anderson for the individual title, while ETSU junior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) tied for seventh at 3-over 219. Other quality efforts by the Bucs included a tie for 20th by sophomore Michael Stewart (Troon, Scotland) and a tie for 22nd by junior Paul O’Kane (Castledawson, Northern Ireland).

“We started pretty well, got a bigger lead and then maintained it,” said ETSH head coach Fred Warren, who has won 42 team titles in his time at ETSU. “We’re delighted, especially to beat a strong field on a punishing course like this one because it can be very demanding. You have to play and finish out on this course, especially with 18 being a Par 5 with water the whole way. We managed to do that.”
