UNF's fifth-place finish at the South Central Regional ties for the best team finish at an NCAA regional in conference history matching the Georgia State squad of 2005. The Ospreys rank as the sixth A-Sun squad in the past seven years to make the NCAA Championship. Enoch advances to Nationals; Bucs miss cut by one stroke NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 22, 2010) – It was a bittersweet day for Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) and the ETSU men’s golf team Saturday afternoon as Enoch qualified for the NCAA Nationals after earning a share of the East Regional crown, but the Bucs missed the cut by one stroke at The Course at Yale.
Enoch, who entered the third and final round with a one shot lead over Penn State’s Kevin Foley, tied fellow Nittany Lion golfer T.J. Howe for the individual championship after carding an even-par 70 and wrapped up play at 7-under 203. Unfortunately, the 31st-ranked Buccaneers couldn’t reach the top five placement despite turning in a respectable 2-under 278 performance in the final round. “I am really proud of Rhys and the way he performed under the pressure today,” commented head ETSU men’s golf coach Fred Warren. “He had a real solid round today and a great tournament overall.” No. 22 UNF Finishes Fourth at Regionals, Advances to NCAA Men's Championships BRYAN, Texas – After struggling in the second round, the University of North Florida golf team came out strong on the final day, shooting the lowest score of the round to finish fourth with a 5-under, 859 (280-298-281) in the 2010 NCAA South Central Regional at the Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. With the fourth place finish, the Ospreys advance to the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn. at The Honors Course, June 1-6. All five of UNF’s golfers finished even or under par in the third round. Freshman Kevin Phelan led the Ospreys throughout the tournament and finished with an 8-under, 208 (66-72-70), tying for second. Sophomore Sean Dale finished 10th with a 3-under, 213 (71-73-69). Senior J.C. Horne tied for 23rd, scoring a 3-over, 219 (73-75-71) while sophomore Joe Byun tied for 27th with a 4-over 220 (71-78-71). Senior Jordan Gibb rounds out the individual scoring for the Ospreys with a 9-over 225 (72-81-72), tying for 43rd. "Kevin did a great job leading us this week," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "Today was a full team effort. Every guy shot par or better and that led us to the low round of the day. We are now looking forward to going to the NCAA Finals." Karlsson's 67 on Saturday Earns him a Tie for Eighth in NCAA Southeast Regional ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Kennesaw State sophomore Jeff Karlsson came out firing on Saturday, firing a 3-under par 67 in the final round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Southeast Region Championship at the Crabapple Club in Alpharetta, Ga., to finish at even par for the tournament in a tie for eighth. His score left him one shot short of a playoff to qualify for the national championship. Karlsson, who had plenty of momentum coming into Saturday after a second round 68, started on the back nine and shot an even-par 35 on the front side before turning on the after burners in a late effort to get into the mix for a national bid. After playing the next six holes in two-under par, he stood at 1-over par, and while he didn’t know exactly where he stood, he had a feeling he would need a couple more birdies down the stretch to have a chance. “I didn’t know at the time that 1-under par would get me into a playoff, but having become familiar with the course and competition over the last two rounds, it seemed logical that that was where I needed to be to have a chance,” said Karlsson. “I was playing well and was just going to score as low as I could and see how it played out.” |
