UNFs' Phelan Qualifies for U.S. Open at Pebble Beach

HOBE SOUND, Fla. – University of North Florida freshman golfer Kevin Phelan is Pebble Beach bound after qualifying for 110th U.S. Open Championship on Monday at McArthur Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla. Phelan shot rounds of 73-65 (138) to co-medal and secure a place at the U.S. Open.

“Unbelievable accomplishment by Kevin today,” said UNF head golf coach Scott Schroeder. “This just caps what has been a great freshman year for him. We will all be looking forward to watching him play the best in the world next week.”

In the first round on Monday, Phelan made a triple bogey on his final hole to finish at one-over par 73. In Phelan’s final round Phelan made his 30 yard flop shot on his final hole for an eagle and a spot in the U.S. Open.

This season for the Ospreys, Phelan recorded 18 sub-par rounds en-route to finishing second (66-72-70, 208) at the NCAA South Central Regional at The Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. He had eight top-10 finishes during the season and earned Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Month honors for March after posting four top-10’s during the month.
