This Week in Atlantic Sun Men's Golf: Feb. 8th

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The men’s golf teams for Jacksonville, Kennesaw State and North Florida will be in action this weekend in the 14-team field at the SunTrust Gator Invitational.

The tournament is the first of the spring for No. 35 North Florida, while No. 54 Kennesaw State finished seventh at the Arizona Invitational and Jacksonville hosted and finished 10th in the Sea Best Invitational.

Joining the A-Sun trio is an impressive field comprised of 11 other teams ranked in the top 100 in the latest GolfWeek rankings. Six other Top-50 teams joins North Florida including host No. 5 Florida, No. 13 Arkansas, No. 23 Liberty, No. 31 Florida State, No. 42 Mississippi State and No. 49 UCF. Also ranked in the Top 100 include No. 51 Georgia Southern, No. 94 Lamar, No. 71 Memphis, No. 66 South Alabama and No. 78 UAB.

UNF played in four events during the fall earning their best finish (3rd) at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship. Senior Sean Dale, who recently captured the medalist title at the prestigious Jones Cup, heads the North Florida lineup for the Gator Invitational. Dale is joined by Kevin Phelan, MJ Maguire, Joey Petronio and Joe Stepnes. Redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock is competing as an individual in the event.

The Owls’ lineup includes Peder Lunde Hermansson, who is the reigning A-Sun Men’s Golf Player of the Week after firing 210 (-3) for a seventh-place finish and leading the Owls also to seventh at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Jimmy Beck, who medaled at the PInetree Intercollegiate in the fall, is ranked 63rd by Golfstat and joins Hermansson along with Austin Vick, Jonathan Klotz and Ben Greene. Beck scored a pair of Golfer of the Week honors in the fall along with one for Greene as well.

JSU’s lineup at the Sea Best included Colin Monagle, Jamey Salmon, Nick Torrance, Brett McKinnon and Trey Douglas. Torrance paced the Dolphins with a 226 to record his Top-20 finish.

The Gator Invitational will be played on the par 70, 6,701 yard layout of the Mark Bostick Golf Course. The event features a 14-team field headlined by seven teams ranked in the latest Top 50 by Golfweek. Competition includes 36 holes of play on Saturday followed by a final round of 18 holes on Sunday.
