BRASELTON, Ga. – The North Florida men’s golf team captured its second-straight Atlantic Sun Championship on Tuesday and swept the championship awards, shooting 291 in the final round as MJ Maguire became the program's first A-Sun Medalist at The Legends Course of Chateau Elan.
The Ospreys’ final round total capped a dominating performance that saw the team place three players in the top-five individuals, highlighted by sophomore MJ Maguire’s individual medalist performance. North Florida’s 291 came in conjunction with scores of 289 and 301 on Sunday and Monday to outpace second-placed ETSU by 14 strokes.
The 14-stroke buffer was the largest margin of victory since 2007, while Maguire’s individual title was the program’s first. It was also the first time since 2002-03 that a team repeated as A-Sun Champion. Jacksonville State was the last to do so.
ETSU’s finish marked the team’s second-straight season with runner-up honors. Kennesaw State (897) placed third on the heels of a final round 306 while Jacksonville (911) and Mercer (918) both shot 298 in the final round.
Florida Gulf Coast (924) took sixth while USC Upstate (926), Lipscomb (929), Northern Kentucky (930) and Stetson (938) rounded out the field.
Maguire posted the tournament’s low round of 68 (-4) on Tuesday, catapulting him from a tie for third place to the individual medalist position. His Tuesday effort pushed his tournament total to 215 and helped him withstand championship bids from ETSU’s Rhys Pugh and Scott Gibson, who placed second and third with scores of 216 and 218, respectively.
UNF’s Joey Petronio carded an even-par 72 on Tuesday and to place fourth at 220 while his teammate Kevin Phelan used 75 strokes in the final round and placed fifth at 221.
A balanced event saw seven of the 10 participating teams place an individual inside the top-10. Jacksonville’s Jamey Salmon and Florida Gulf Coast’s Edward Figueroa tied for sixth at 222, Kennesaw State’s Austin Vick placed eighth at 224, and USC Upstate’s Adam Goins and Mercer’s Hans Reimers tied for ninth at 226.
Seven teams out of the 10-team field – ETSU, Jacksonville, Mercer, FGCU, USC Upstate, Lipscomb and Stetson – also posted their best team totals in the final round.
North Florida now awaits seeding in the upcoming NCAA Regionals, to be contested on May 16-18. Selections will be announced on May 6 at 9 p.m.
