MACON, Ga. - Well deserved national recognition, success in domestic and international tournaments and more opportunities to participate in upcoming prestigious events are a few of the highlights in the latest #ASunMGolf update.
R&A Amateur Championship – Kent, England
Six A-Sun golfers were in action at the 2013 R&A Amateur Championship in England, June 17-22, including four ETSU teammates. The Bucs' Adrian Meronk, Rhys Pugh, Scott Gibson and Gudmundur Kristansson joined North Florida's Sean Dale and USC Upstate's Ryan Cornfield in the field.
Following the first two rounds of stroke play, Meronk (72-68/140, -3) and Gibson (73-68/141, -2) were tied for first and third, respectively. As the top seed, Meronk claimed victory in his first match over Denmark's Thomas Sorensen, 4&3, while Gibson dropped his match in 19 holes to Sweden's Pontus Gad. Soerensen is also a member of the Arkansas Razorbacks, while Gad was a standout for TCU.
Meronk fell in his next match to Italy's Renato Paratore, 3&2.
Just missing the +4 cut line was UNF senior and three-time A-Sun Player of the Year Dale (77-71/148, +5) and ETSU's Rhys Pugh (73-75/148, +5). Fellow Buccaneer and A-Sun All-Freshman teammate Gudmundur Kristjansson (80-71/151, +8) and USC Upstate's Ryan Cornfield (84-68/152, +9) completed the A-Sun participation in the Amateur Championship.
Oregon Amateur – Eugene, Ore.
Playing in his home state, Mercer's Hans Reimers (73-76/149, +4) tied for 18th after two rounds of stroke play at the Eugene Country Club in the Oregon Amateur Championship. Reimers claimed victory in his first two matches, 2&1 in both, before falling 3&2 in the tourament's quarterfinal.
Southern Amateur – Little Rock, Ark.
Lipscomb's Blanton Farmer fired two rounds under par and shot -3 today to finish in a tie for 15th (76-71-73-69/289, +1) in the 106th Southern Amateur at Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Ark.
PING All-America Honors
North Florida seniors Sean Dale and Kevin Phelan and sophomore MJ Maguire continue to receive national recognition for their play, as they were named to the second, third and honorable mention PING All-America Teams announced by the GCAA Thursday. Dale earned second-team membership, while Maguire was selected to the third team and Phelan earned honorable mention. The trio joined only 55 other golfers to receive the honors.
Phelan will next play in the Irish Open, June 27-30 at the Carton House, Co. Kildare., and continues to compete to earn a spot on Team Great Britain/Ireland for the Walker Cup on Sept. 6-8 in Southampton, N.Y.
Pugh is exempt for and will be playing in the Open Championship at Muirfield, July 18-21. He is also exempt for the US Amateur in August.
