Campbell. Spahr Top Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index
Date Posted: 9/20/2006
Atlantic Sun men's golf continues to carve out its niche among the best in collegiate golf as Campbell headlines the first Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, sweeping the top spot in the team and individual rankings
Senior Kyle Spahr, who tied a course record with a second-round 65, played the Hartford Invitational's par-5 holes at 11-under, while recording three eagles, one double eagle and 12 birdies during the event. His 201 tied a school 54-hole record set by Simon Dunn at the UCF Rio Pinar Intercollegiate in Oct. 2001. Spahr’s 65 was one shot off the school Division I era record for a single round (set by Dunn at Rio Pinar).
Campbell won the team trophy at Hartford by four strokes over second-place San Francisco to hand 17th-year head coach John Crooks his 31st men’s tournament coaching victory. The Fighting Camels finished the event 8-under as a team after setting a school team record for lowest 36-hole total (562) in the process.
Off to the best start in school history, the JU men's golf team finds its name ranked sixth in the first issue of the Golfweek Performance Index on Monday.
JU is one of the hottest teams in the country after winning its second tournament title in as many events to open the season. The Dolphins have won their last four regular-season tournament titles dating back to last season.
Duncan Stewart, with two individual titles in his hands this season, has now won four straight regular-season tournament titles - two coming in a playoff. He opens the year ranked 21st in the GPI. The senior star for JU has now won seven career titles and is one away from tying the school record for most individual titles in a season and is already the school's all-time record holder in career victories.
A third A-Sun member, UNF, landed in the top-25 after checking in at 22nd. Omitted from the rankings is GolfWorld.com's 17th-ranked team ETSU who had yet to complete a tournament when the first set index was released.
