Power Finishes Tied for Second in Tucson

Date Posted: 1/31/2007

Despite playing in his first collegiate tournament of the spring season, ETSU freshman golfer Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) wasted little time turning heads and proving he belonged at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate.

The Irishman finished the third and final round of the event with a 3-under-par 68 Monday at the Arizona National Golf Club, ending the tournament with three sub-70 rounds (69-66-68=203) to place tied for second on the individual leaderboard However, Power was not the lone Buccaneer to play well, as fellow Irishman Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) posted scores of 68-69-69=206 to tie for fifth, while senior Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) finished tied for 20th with rounds of 69-76-66=211.

In all, the 11th-ranked Bucs would post the most sub-70 rounds of any team in the event and placed sixth in the highly competitive field, finishing with a score of 4-under-par 848.

“Seamus had a great tournament tying for second, and Gareth and Rhys really played well,” said ETSU head coach Fred Warren. “Both Seamus and Gareth posted three rounds in the 60s, which is impressive. Obviously, we would have liked a better team total, but what we saw is encouraging.”

Power said he just felt good coming into the event.

“Everything just came together at the right time,” Power said. “We had just enough time between Christmas and now to practice and get ready. I hit a lot of fairways the last couple of days, which was important because this course was unlike any other I’ve played. It was very strange hitting from fairway to fairway with desert everywhere. As a team it was good to see us score well.”
