Power Three Strokes Off Lead as ETSU Climbs to Fifth
Date Posted: 5/18/2007
TEMPE, Ariz. – Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year Seamus Power (Waterford, Ireland) and Ben Hogan Award finalist Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) bolstered the ETSU men’s golf team’s hopes of making back-to-back trips to the NCAA Championships, as both posted scores in the mid 60s Friday during second round action in the NCAA West Regional hosted by Arizona State at the Karsten Golf Course.
Power finished the day with a 6-under-par score of 66 to finish at 9-under-par for the tournament and tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard. Meanwhile, Davies fired a score of 5-under 67 and is currently tied for 16th at 7-under-par for the event. Both Power and Davies are chasing individual leaders Benjamin Alvarado of Arizona State and Jamie Lovemark of USC, who are at 12-under-par after two rounds.
Most importantly, the Bucs fired a team score of 277 to finish the second round at 21-under-par 555 for the event and are tied for fifth on the team leaderboard. While they trail team leader UCLA by 14 strokes, the Buccaneers are in good position to capture one of the coveted Top 10 spots, which result in a berth to the NCAA Championships later this month in Williamsburg, Va.
“We didn’t start out well again today, but just like yesterday we made some shots on the back,” said ETSU head coach Fred Warren, whose team is attempting to make its 16th trip to the NCAA Championships. “We’d like to be further from the cut line because really – besides the top three teams – there are still 16 teams out there with a shot. Rhys and Seamus made some shots and that helped us. When you tee off here you know you have to shoot a good score because there are a lot of birdie opportunities out there. Hopefully we can do that again tomorrow.”
Davies’ round included five birdies on the back nine and six total on the day, while Power posted an eagle on No. 10, fired six birdies and finished with a 66 after posting a pair of bogeys on No. 6 and No. 12. Along with Davies and Power, junior Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) finished at 2-under-par 70 and is currently tied for 40th, while junior Cian McNamara (Limerick, Ireland) fired a 2-over-par 74 and is tied for 69th.
