JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Members of the men's golf team at UNF have seen success on the links this summer, including Major Forbess and Chris Kennedy, who captured the Florida State Amateur Four-Ball Championship earlier this month.
Kevin Alwyin became the most recent title recepient when he went wire-to-wire to defend his title at the Florida State Public Links
Championship at Hunters Creek Golf Club in Orlando on July 18-20. Forbess and Kennedy were victorious the week before, claiming their victory on July 13.
In the Florida State Amateur Four-Ball Championship, Forbess put the pair ahead for good on the famous 17th hole with a 40-foot birdie putt. That helped the team secure a 66 on the day and capture a one-stroke victory.
Forbess and Kennedy – who will each enter their sophomore season this year – trailed by five strokes heading into Sunday’s final round of play. The duo opened the tournament with a 67 on Saturday on the par 72 Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass.
Sunday’s 66 was the low round of the day by two strokes.
In four-ball play, both players complete each hole with the lowest score on the hole counting.
Aylwin, a native of New Smyrna Beach, played steady golf to post a tournament total of 6-under par 210 to win the Championship by three strokes. After firing a first round 5-under par 67, Aylwin recorded a 73 in the second round to lead by two heading into the final round of play.
"I didn't miss a fairway all first round," Aylwin said. "It made it a lot easier to get around the course."
In the final round, Aylwin made the turn at 34 with birdies on the fifth and eighth holes. On the back nine, he started with five consecutive pars, birdied 15 and made bogey on 17 - his only bogey of the day - to secure his second Public Links Championship.
"I really wanted to win," said Aylwin. "This win feels great."
In addition to the 2007 Public Links Championship, Aylwin won last year's Junior Match Play Championship earning him Florida Junior Player-of-the-Year honors. Aylwin captured this weekend’s title after spending the first part of his week at the U.S. Public Links Championship in Aurora, Colo., where he finished tied for ninth in stroke play before losing out in the opening round of match play.
