PINEHURST, N.C. - UNF's rising junior J.C. Horne and recent graduate Michael O'Neal each saw runs at the U.S. Amateur end on Wednesday as both were eliminated in the first round of match play competition.
Both Horne and O'Neal lost their matches by scores of 2 and 1. Horne grabbed his lone lead of the day on the par-4 fifth hole with a par. His opponent, Canadian Graham Hill responded by winning each of the final four holes on the front nine to take a 3-up lead at the turn. Horne answered back winning on holes No. 10, No. 12 and No. 14 to square the match. Hill regained the lead with a birdie on the par-3 15th hole and closed out the match with another birdie on the 17th hole.
O'Neal fell behind to Jacob Burger from the start as he lost the opening hole. He trailed by a 3-up on a pair of occasions but won the 12th hole and 15th hole with birdies narrowing the gap to 1-up. His tournament ended in a similar fashion to Horne as Burger won the match with a birdie on the par-3 17th hole.
