MACON, Ga. - The FGCU men's golf team won the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic over the weekend. The Eagles posted the low score in each of the three rounds and Kyle Hammond and Michael Hart tied for third place.
The Eagles opened up the tournament with a 286, placing them in a first place tie. The Eagles then fired a 287 to take a six stroke heading into the last round. The Eagles posted their best round of the event with a 277, running away with a 12 shot win. The Eagles finished -2, and were the only team in the red.
Hammond and Hart both finished with a 211 at two under. Brandon Pena finished seventh with a 216. Zach Robinson and Josh Leppo finished 17th and 22nd respectively. Robinson was +8 at 221 with Leppo one shot behind. In the 15 team tournament, the Eagles stroke total of 850 was 12 shots better than Jacksonville State. Stetson was third at +22.
The Eagles will take the course again this weekend at the Big 5 Classic in Philadelphia, Pa.
In other news, Former JU golfer Russell Knox has kicked off his professional career quite well.
Knox was recently named NGA Hooters Tour "Rookie of the Year" and will be competing in the first stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School this week at the St. Johns Golf and Country Club.
A year ago, Knox advanced through the pre-qualifying tournament and just missed going to the second stage of Q-School by one shot.
This year, Knox's game is in fine form after winning more than $64,000 on the NGA Hooters Tour, ranking fourth on the money list.
In 18 tournaments this season, Knox has made the cut 13 times and finished with a 70.73 stroke average. He has five top 10 finishes, tying for second twice.
His former teammates start a three week stretch on Monday. The JU men's golf team tees it up at the Charleston Southern Fall Invitational, kicking off the first of three straight weeks of competition for the Dolphins.
JU is coming off a 10th place finish in its first tournament of the season at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate. Justin Jones led the Dolphins with a 36th place finish at 13-over par.
