Wednesday, January 17, 2007 Macon, Ga. -- After setting three personal bests and grabbing two individual championships at the UNC Opener in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday, it was announced today that Campbell's Sam Tilly is the Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week. Tilly, a junior sport management major, fell just three and a half inches shy of a provisional bid to the NCAA Regional with his leap of 24-03.75 (7.41m) but still captured first place in the event and established a new personal best. The Port Charlotte, Fla., native also won the triple jump with his personal-best leap of 46-08.75 (14.24m). On the track, Tilly set a new personal best time in the 60-meter dash (7.08). He finished 16th in the event. The award is the first for Tilly and marks the fourth time that a Campbell athlete has been named the A-Sun Athlete of the Week dating back to its inception last year. Tilly joins teammate Lincoln Gordon, who was a three-time award-winner during the 2006 indoor track and field season. The Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week is announced every Wednesday during the 2007 indoor track season. The 12-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF and Stetson with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate beginning competition in 2007-08. |
