ETSU’s James and Belmont’s Frye Earn Weekly Honors

MACON, Ga. - ETSU sprinter Mike James and Belmont thrower Joe Frye earned Atlantic Sun Runner and Field Athlete of the Week in Track and Field, respectfully, the conference announced on Wednesday.

James kicked off the indoor track and field season on a high note on Saturday evening at the Appalachian State Invitational inside the Holmes Center. James set a provisional mark in the season debut – clocking in with the fastest time in the 55m hurdles at 7.35. Even after the altitude adjustment James’ time still held as a provisional mark, sitting at 7.37. James also ran a leg in the men’s 4x400m relay, finishing second with a time of 3:22.

Frye led the Bruins in setting two school records at the Saluki Fast Start Meet over the weekend. In the weight throw, Frye posted a toss of 17.98 meters (59'), eclipsing Tyler Howell's school record of 16.96m and placing 6th of the 25 throwers. In the shot put, Frye also broke a previous mark by Howell, recording a mark of 15.13m (49' 7¾") to finish ninth.

Jerome McKinzie, Kennesaw State (Sr. - High Jump - Marietta, Ga. - Communications) – McKinzie’s jump of 6-feet-11-inches won the Men's High Jump event at the Appalachian State Invitational in Boone, N.C. on Saturday. The senior’s jump stands as the third highest of the season in the nation among Division I jumpers, according to the NCAA's Track & Field Reporting System.

Notes From Around the A-Sun
Belmont

- A few members of the Belmont men’s track and field team got off to any early start for the indoor season over the weekend.  Redshirt-junior thrower Joe Frye (Roscommon, Mich.) led the Bruins by setting two school records.  In the weight throw, Frye's best toss was 17.98 meters (59'), which eclipsed Tyler Howell's school record of 16.96m and placed 6th of the 25 throwers.  In the shot put, Frye also broke a previous mark by Howell, recording a mark of 15.13m (49'  7¾" ) to finish ninth.

- Redshirt-junior decathlete Matt Fiedler (LaGrange, Ill.) had a busy day competing in the 60 meter hurdles, high jump, long jump, and shot put.  Fiedler's best performance was a 6.58m (21' 7¼") leap in the long jump.  Sophomore sprinter Sam Parr (St. Louis, Mo.)led the Bruins on the track.  He clocked 7.29 in the 60m dash and followed that up with a 53.69 in the 400m, which also saw freshman John Cebula (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) make his Belmont debut, running a 57.15.

- Both the men’s and women’s teams return to competition on January 23, 2010 when they compete at the MTSU Invitational.

Kennesaw State

- Four Owls set indoor school records on Saturday at the Appalachian State Invitational in Boone, NC, while three won events. Senior Jerome McKinzie, the 3-time Atlantic Sun Indoor High Jump champ, won the High Jump with a jump of 6-feet-11-inches. The jump is currently the third highest in the country among NCAA Division I participants.

- Senior Josh McNair's Shot Put throw of 54-feet-11.25-inches won the event, and also bested his old school record. Junior Josh James, freshman Etahn Kasson, freshman Tremaine Grant, and junior James Verdi won the 4x400 Meter Relay with a time of 3:20.30. Also setting indoor school records for the Owls were freshmen Aaron Chamblee in the Pole Vault (14'5.25"), Tremaine Grant in the 55 Meter High Hurdles (7.75 seconds) and Travis Benton in the 55 Meter Dash (6.43 seconds).
