MACON, Ga. – For the second year in a row, Mike James from ETSU and Joe Frye from Belmont opened the indoor track and field season by claiming the A-Sun weekly awards, announced Wednesday by the league office. Competing in three events, James left Boone, N.C. with a first and second place finish coming in the 55m hurdles and 4x400m, while also taking eighth in the 55m dash. Last year’s champion in the weight throw, Frye kicked off the new season in style by breaking the school record in the event with a toss of 61’9.75” at the Saluki Fast Start Meet.
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
Mike James (ETSU – Hurdles/Sprints – Sr. – Palm Bay, Fla.)
• Second Career A-Sun Track Athlete of the Week award
• Finished first in the 55m hurdles at the Appalachian Collegiate Indoor in 7.52
• Took eighth in 55m (6.50) and second in 4x400m relay (3:18.96)
• Ranks 10th nationally in the short-distance hurdles; relay team slated at 16th
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
Joe Frye (Belmont – Throws – Sr. – Roscommon, Mich. – Music)
• Fifth A-Sun Field Athlete of the Week award
• Set a Belmont school record in the weight throw with a toss of 18.84m (61’9.75”)
• Took second in the event at the Saluki Fast Start Meet
• Place fourth in the shot put with a top distance of 15.90m (52’2”)
• Currently ranks seventh in the nation in weight throw and 28th nationally in shot put
OTHER NOMINEES:
• Jarrod Burton (Throws, ETSU) – Finished second in shot put and weight throw at Appalachian Collegiate Indoor
• Caleb Darnell (Hurdles/Sprints, Belmont) – Ran a 23.92 in the 200m and 52.67 in 400m
