MACON, Ga. - USC Upstate's Gilbert Kemboi and North Florida's David Shepherdearned the Atlantic Sun Men's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors, announced Wednesday by the league office. Kemboi broke the program record in the 5,000-meter run at the Niswonger Invitational, while Shepherd vaulted to a height of 16'6.75 to break his own program record at the Embry-Riddle Challenge.
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
Gilbert Kemboi, USC Upstate (Jr. – Distance – Eldoret, Kenya – Sociology)
- Third Career A-Sun Indoor Track Athlete of the Week Honor
- Broke school record in 5,000m run with time of 14:23.19
- Finished in first place in the event at the Niswonger Invitational
- Time ranks as the best in the A-Sun and 18th in the nation
OTHER NOMINEES:
- Tucker Peabody (So., Lipscomb) – Ranks 14th in the nation in 200m dash (21.28)
- Sean White (So., North Florida) – Won the 800m and 1000m runs at the Embry-Riddle Challenge
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
David Shepherd, North Florida (So. – Pole Vault – Plantation, Fla.)
- First Career Indoor Field Athlete of the Week award
- Broke his own school record in pole vault at Embry-Riddle Challenge
- Vaulted to height of 5.05m (16'6.75) to win first place
- Mark is best in the conference by .30 meters
OTHER NOMINEES:
- Matthew Deery (Fr., Lipscomb) – Top collegiate finisher in pole vault at Niswonger Invitational; set school record (15'7")
- Kenny Sugishita (Jr., USC Upstate) – Claimed second and sixth respectively in shot put (15.94m) and weight throw (16.98m)
