Spartan Duo Takes Indoor Track and Field Weekly Honors

MACON, Ga. - USC Upstate's Matt Johnson and Kenny Sugishita earned weekly Atlantic Sun Men's Indoor Track and Field honors, announced Wednesday by the league office.

The Spartan duo made the podium in their first meet of the season at Clemson's Orange & Purple Winter Classic.

Matt Johnson, USC Upstate
(Jr. – Sprints – Elgin, S.C. – Communications)
  • First Career Track Athlete of the Week award
  • Finished first in the 500-meter dash and marked a program-best time of 1:05.00
  • Defeated 15 runners in the 500-meter dash field including competitors from Clemson and Georgia Tech
  • Teamed with Jake McKown, Tracy Fisher and Carlton White in the 4x400-meter relay to cross the line in 3:27.77
  • Ifrish Alberg (Jr., ETSU) – Finished second at Clemson's Orange and Purple Classic in the 60m Dash
Kenny Sugishita, USC Upstate
(Sr. – Throws – Arroyo Grande, Calif. – Accounting)
  • Third Career Field Athlete of the Week award; first this season
  • Turned in two strong performances for the Spartans at Clemson's Orange & Purple Winter Classic
  • Took first-place in the weight throw with a toss of 16.47-meters
  • In the shot put, came in third with a hurl of 15.24-meters
