Macon, Ga. -- Besting a 24-year-old school record in the final week of regular season competition, Campbell's Bryan Ames captured the last Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week award, league officials announced today.

The Elk Groves, Calif. native finished ninth overall in the shot put but was able to extend the tape to 46-6 1/4 (14.18m) to break Campbell's 24-year-old record established by Orville Peterson in 1983.

Ames, a freshman advertising major, currently has the fifth best put in the Atlantic Sun entering the conference championships.

The award is the first for Ames and marks the fourth time this season that a freshman has been named the A-Sun AOTW. Ames is the third member of the Campbell family to receive the award as he follows three-time recipient Lincoln Gordon and Sam Tilly.

The Atlantic Sun Athlete of the Week is announced every Wednesday during the 2007 indoor track season.

The 12-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, UNF and Stetson with Florida Gulf Coast and USC Upstate beginning competition in 2007-08.

MacArthur broke his own school record for the third time this season in the weight throw with a toss of 51-3 (15.62m) at the Appalachian Limited meet.

Wright broke ETSU's 55-meter hurdle record at the Appalachian State Indoor Open on Thursday with a fourth-place, season-best time of 7.81.
