MACON, Ga. – In the final weekend before the Atlantic Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships, Belmont thrower Joe Frye warmed up for the meet by setting a school record in the weight throw. On Wednesday the conference announced that he had won his first male Athlete of the Week award, the final award of the indoor season.
Frye, a sophomore music business major from Roscommon, Mich., broke the school record with a distance of 53-10.5 (16.42m) at the Broadway Prescription Invitational, hosted by Southeast Missouri, on Feb. 22. The throw was good enough to place Frye in fifth for the competition. He will enter the Indoor Track and Field Championships with the third-best throw in the event. He also owns a top-six distance in the shot put. His throw of 47-04.25 (14.43m) ranks sixth in the league. He set that mark on Jan. 5 at the Ed Temple Classic.
