MACON, Ga.- The Mercer men's soccer team battled through the rain and wind, shutting out Emory University, 1-0, in Atlanta Monday night to even their preseason record at 1-1.
The homestanding Eagles out shot Mercer 11-8 on the night and tallied five corner kicks to the Bears' two, but Mercer senior Clif Wilson scored an unassisted goal in the 77th minute to give the Bears the victory. Wilson and junior Luis Hernandez paced Mercer with two shots, while senior forward Del Olaoye, Omar Liendo, Andrew Jones and Mark McKeever garnered one shot apiece.
Goalkeepers David Bird and Aldo Balsano again split time between the pipes for the Bears, combining to help close down the Eagles' attack.
Mercer kicks off the 2005 regular season Sat., Sept. 3, facing Elon University in the opening round of the Adidas Wolfpack Classic, hosted by N.C. State.
