Macon, Ga. - After a high-scoring opening weekend of men's soccer, Campbell's Willy Guadarrama and Belmont's Kyle Roelke earned Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honors.
Guadarrama exploded for a career-high four goals (in only five shots) and led Campbell to its highest offensive output in nearly five years in a 6-1 victory over Marshall on Saturday at the West Virginia University Labor Day Shootout. Campbell scored six goals in a match for the first time since a 6-3 victory over Elon on Sept. 27, 2000. CU's 5-goal margin of victory was its largest since a 5-0 blanking of UNC Wilmington on October 4, 2000. A native of Cedar Park, Texas, Guadarrama is majoring in Sports Management, and is currently tied for the league lead with four goals and eight points. Campbell hosts Liberty in their 2005 home opener on September 7.
Roelke put Belmont into the win column with his shutout effort versus Centenary in the second day of the Memphis Diadora Tournament. The white-washing was one of just three shutouts posted by A-Sun teams in the opening weekend. The junior goalkeeper made four saves to blank the Gents and help deliver the Bruins first victory of 2005. In the season opener, Roelke played the first double overtime match of his career against Oral Roberts at the 7th Annual Memphis Diadora Tournament over the weekend. He logged 199:59 minutes in goal for the Bruins, surrendering three goals to the Mid Continent Conference preseason favorite with the last coming literally in the final second of play. For the week, the Mishawaka, Ind., native recorded 10 saves over two contests and picked up the third shutout of his career against Centenary. Roelke is majoring in Business Administration and returns to the field on September 9 when Belmont continues its season-opening four-match road swing at UNC Asheville.
