Macon, Ga. – Tyler Kettering of Gardner-Webb and Vicente Arze of Mercer claimed Atlantic Sun Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week honors as announced by the league office on September 12.
Kettering helped Gardner-Webb extend their season-opening unbeaten streak to four matches after a pair of 2-2 draws last week. The Defensive Player of the Week turned away a season-high 11 shots including one with just five seconds remaining to preserve the tie with Furman on September 6. His 11 saves were just one off his career-high. On Saturday evening, junior goalkeeper came up big again with eight more saves to help the Bulldogs to a 2-2 decision versus Liberty. Kettering has been in goal for all 400 minutes of action this season and his 1.35 goals against average is the lowest in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Xenia, Ohio native is majoring in Health and Wellness. It is the second A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week honor for Kettering.
Mercer sophomore forward Vicente Arze took three shots and scored on two of them, helping lead the Bears to a 3-2 win over Furman in the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational. He notched Mercer’s first goal in the 29th minute and the Bears’ game-winning score at the 78:29 mark. The native of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, who missed Mercer’s first two matches of the season due to injury, also tallied a goal on his only shot of the afternoon in the Bears’ 5-3 loss to Coastal Carolina, Sunday. His goal in the 65th minute tied the game after Mercer had fallen behind 2-0. Arze is majoring in Business and earns his second career Player of the Week nod.
