The Bruins are returning to the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the third time in as many years after a win over league newcomer North Florida two weeks ago. The Bruins were awarded the sixth seed at the tournament and will face off against host Mercer on Thursday night. BU defeated the Bears in their previous meeting this season, 2-1.
The Fighting Camels won their first A-Sun regular season championship by tying a school record for league wins in a season (7-1). CU was unbeaten (4-0-0) in four home games vs. A-Sun opponents and surrendered just two goals in those contests. With a 12-5-1 overall record, Campbell has doubled its win total from 2004 (6-10-1). Campbell fell to No.-12 N.C. State on Wednesday, leaving the Camels 2-1 this year vs. ranked opponents. State’s second-half goal ended a string of 358-consecutive shutout minutes in home games for the Campbell defense.
The Owls stumbled a bit as the regular season finally came to a closethis week, but there is a silver lining. The team is finally starting to get healthy again after a season where FAU has been ravaged by injuries. Despite losing their final two games to Campbell and Gardner-Webb, the team expects to put together a solid postseason run as the #4 seed in the upcoming A-Sun tournament.
The Bulldogs would wrap up their season in big way, by going 2-0 this past weekend. The 'Dogs would shutout UNCA, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldog defense would only allow UNCA to get off four shots for the game. On Sunday afternoon, the Bulldogs would play the role of the spoiler, as they would defeat conference opponent Flordia Atlantic, 2-1, thus knocking the Owls out of a possible second place finish, and a first round bye in the A-Sun Championship.
The Dolphins won their second consecutive Dennis Violett Memorial Cup by defeating cross-town rival UNF, 4-1, on Friday night. Junior Tommy Krizanovic scored two goals in the game, while freshman Phillip Meyner and Akeem Priestley each added a goal. The Dolphins wrapped up their road schedule with a 2-2 tie against Wofford last Tuesday. Sophomore Anton Axelsson and Krizanovic both scored a goal for the Dolphins.
The Bisons closed out their first season under Coach Charles Morrow with a 3-0 loss on the road at Alabama A & M. The Bisons won five games this season, tying the previous high mark of five set in 2003.
Mercer celebrated Senior Night by shutting out Winthrop, 2-0, in non-conference action at Bear Field Saturday night. The Bears snapped a four-game winless streak and also shut down the nation's fifth-highest scoring offense in the process, as the Eagles entered the match averaging 2.69 goals per game. This year marks the eighth consecutive season that the Bears have qualified for the conference championship and the third straight year that Mercer has hosted the event.
UNF closed out its inaugural Division I season with a pair of losses to A-Sun rivals FAU (1-0 on Oct. 31) and Jacksonville (4-1 on Nov. 4). The Ospreys finished their 2005 slate with a 3-10-1 mark. UNF freshman Rohan Culley led the Ospreys in scoring with five goals and 10 points. Sophomore Martin Pettersson was second on the team in scoring with nine points, while leading UNF in assists (3), shots (29) and shots on goal (17).
Stetson will compete in its eighth consecutive conference tournament. This is the first time the Hatters have earned a first-round bye. Stetson finished regular season play third in the league in points, goals and assists. Sophomore Tanner Wolfe leads the Hatters in points (30), goals (13), game-winning goals (6) and assists (4).
