Belmont completed its four-match
road trip over the weekend in the Carolinas. The Bruins played their second
double overtime contest in as many weeks, this time at UNC Asheville on Friday.
Unfortunately, neither team was unable to convert on some opportunities down
stretch and the match ended in a 2-2 tie. Belmont was also edged at Wofford,
2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Willy Guadarrama continued
his goal-scoring exploits on Wednesday with two goals (including the game-winner)
in a 3-2 victory over Liberty. He ran his total to six goals in three games
this year. Campbell (2-1-0) is off to its best start to open the season in 10
years. The 1995 squad posted two victories and a tie in its first three matches
en route to an A-Sun West Division title and eventual berth in the league final
at Miami, Fla. Campbell has led 2-0 at the half in each of its last two games,
a 6-1 win over Marshall and a 3-2 victory over Liberty.
Florida Atlantic University
had a rough week, dropping both games this weekend after a 3-2 2OT loss to Florida
International University on Wednesday. They lost 5-0 to Denver on Friday and
2-0 to Air Force on Sunday. The Owls will continue their road trip as they head
down to Miami for a tournament hosted by Florida International. Florida Atlantic
is scheduled to play Xavier on Friday at 5 p.m., and Alabama A & M on Sunday
at noon.
The Bulldogs (2-0-2) finished
the week with 2 ties against Furman and Liberty. However, the Bulldogs remain
unbeaten as this week they travel to Winthrop University to play in the Wingate
Inn Classic. The Bulldogs will play Radford on Friday, September 16, at 3 p.m.
and Winthrop on Saturday, September 17, at 7:00 p.m.
The Dolphins high-powered
offense struck again as they scored four first-half goals to defeat VMI, 4-1,
Saturday at the JU/Adidas Invitational. Freshman Anton Axelsson scored two goals,
while junior Tommy Krizanovic and sophomore Drew Lear each added a goal. Freshman
Joey Sanchez recorded five saves in first collegiate start. The Dolphins fell
to UNC-Wilmington, 3-2, on Sunday. Freshman Akeem Priestley scored two goals
to tie the game, but the Dolphins gave up a late goal to the Seahawks.
Sophomore forward Ben Page
scored two unassisted goals as the Lipscomb Bisons finished the week 1-1-1.
Page scored the game-tying goal with 5:35 left to play to secure a tie with
Evansville.The 2-1 victory over UNC Asheville on Sunday is the first road victory
for the Bisons since a victory over Florida Atlantic on the road on Oct. 23,
2003. This is the best start ever for the Bisons who are 2-1-1 for the season
under first-year coach Charles Morrow.
The Bears earned their first
win of the 2005 campaign with a 3-2 win over Furman in the Diadora/Spinx Furman
Invitational. Vicente Arze scored two goals in helping Mercer to the victory.
Mercer dropped a Sunday match with Coastal Carolina by a count of 5-3. The Bears
fell behind 2-0, but rallied to take the lead on consecutive goals by Del Olaoye,
Arze and newcomer Luis Hernandez, only to see the Chanticleers post a rally
of their own to take the win.
UNF played to a 1-1 tie
with Georgia Southern in its only match of the week. The double overtime contest
was the first of the season for UNF, which played two overtime matches in 2004.
Sophomore Mark Sergio tallied his first goal of the 2005 season to help ensure
the tie despite the Ospreys being outshot 21-9. Martin Pettersson tallied UNF's
first assists of the season.
The Hatters suffered its
second double overtime loss of the year Saturday as it fell to UNC Wilmington
3-2 at the JU Invitational. After starting the season on a three-game losing
streak, Stetson earned its first win as it eased past VMI 6-1 Sunday at the
JU Invitational. Freshman Armante Marshall (Tallahassee, Fla.) led the Hatters
with two goals and two assists for the weekend. Three Hatters had multiple goal
matches (Marshall, Cody Dawson, Tanner Wolfe).
